From simple kayaks to 50+ mph bass boats, there is a freshwater fishing boat for every application.
- Belly boats are one form of “boat” used in freshwater fishing. These odd craft are basically a set of chest waders combined with floatation to form a wearable means of moving thru the water. These are popular among fishermen that target fish near shore in small ponds or along sheltered shorelines.
- Kayaks are extremely popular for freshwater fishing. These simple craft move silently and effortlessly, going where other boats cannot venture. Kayak fishermen fish for bass, catfish, panfish and other freshwater fish.
- Canoes are another light weight boat used in freshwater fishing. They are often kept at summer cabins where they can be launched easily and used to explore lakes and creeks. When necessary, canoes can be moved over land to reach otherwise inaccessible waterways.
- Jon boats are popular styles of freshwater fishing boats. Made from aluminum, they are light, durable and require very little maintenance. Simple versions offer built in seating and are designed to accept small electric or gas powered engines. - Small molded boats are another lightweight, portable option. Many of these feature a pontoon or catamaran shape and are light enough to be transported and launched by one or two anglers. Some units accept electric motors for propulsion.
- Open skiffs are a classic type of fishing boat. They are common on northern lakes and other sheltered areas where anglers fish for species such as musky, northern pike and lake trout. These boats usually have few features except a motor, bare seats and room for 2-4 anglers.

- Center consoles are hardcore fishing boats. Usually set up for saltwater fishing, they are also used extensively on larger lakes, rivers and other waterways. Their speed and ability to endure harsh weather makes them a good choice for some applications.
- Cuddy cabins are another choice for large bodies of water. These full featured boats offer a cabin below for shelter and storage. Most models are powered by large outboard, inboard-outboard or shaft drive engines.
- Air boats are popular in southern swamps and marshes. Although noisy when underway, they are able to travel over waters that are filled with stumps, logs, aquatic vegetation and other hazzards.
- Sportfishermen are the largest boats used for freshwater fishing. These mammoth boats have the size and safety features to handle severe weather on lakes, large rivers and coastal estuaries.

Small Folding Boats

The idea of a folding kayak seems to have been born from considering the way in which Eskimos built their kayaks. They used oiled animal skin stretched tightly over a frame made from wood or bone. The small folding boat reverses this. It is a skin into which is placed a re-assembled frame.
Small folding boats have played their part during wartime because, being collapsible, they require little space for storage – a great help for example on a submarine. It can also be concluded therefore, that they performed to a level which made taking them along worthwhile.
But if you’re thinking that folding kayaks are gimmicky craft for short hauls only, forget it. Dr Hannes Lindemann crossed the Atlantic in a folding kayak. He embarked on his epic journey alone in a Klepper kayak. His story has been well documented. Klepper kayaks led the field in the ‘slip frame into skin’ design. The company built a reputation for producing kayaks which were durable, long-lasting and stable. They have even successfully undertaken whitewater journeys.
The skin of today’s small folding boats would be manufactured from a durable water-resistant fabric. Some manufacturers add air pockets inside the hull to increase their stability and buoyancy.
Materials used for the frame today are either wood, aluminum or plastic and can even be a combination of all three. It should be noted here that aluminum’s lightweight and durable properties make it a popular material for the frame and portability.
Small folding boats are found today in several different forms. Kayaks, canoes and dinghies have all been made to fold. People who prefer them often do so because of the fact that they cannot be punctured, as can happen with an inflatable.
They are easy to launch, especially since, being portable, they do not need a trailer and the subsequent manoeuvrings this entails. Also be aware that items like seat, outboard, fuel tank and transom plate may well be part of the user’s desired package. These also take up space in the vehicle in which the folding boat is being taken.
Seats can be affixed fairly easily to the thwart. Be aware of the floor movement on the water, but this, as with some inflatables, is something to which one soon becomes accustomed. If going out on open water in heavy weather, keep in mind the freeboard height if it’s a small boat or dinghy you are looking to use. The higher the freeboard, the drier the inside of the boat will remain. They perform best in quiet, flat water.
Lastly, small folding boats are usually priced higher than similar rigid or inflatable varieties.

Kayaking and canoeing are both water activities using a form of a boat – either a kayak or a canoe. What then are the differences between a kayak and a canoe?
Canoe. With regard to shape a canoe is wider and has a flat bottom. It is open at the top with seats for the paddlers who are either in a seating or kneeling position. A canoe has curves on each end and are more apt for slow leisurely paddling on quiet and still bodies of water. Single blade paddles are used by two or more paddlers. Canoes are bulkier and are best used as a fishing platform in quiet water. If a canoe flips, get out and swim away as it will not right itself.
Kayak. A kayak is narrower than a canoe. It is enclosed at the top and may even have a spray skirt to make the paddler’s body sealed from water. A kayak can be designed for one or more paddlers. A paddler sits on the kayak’s floor with his feet in front of him. A paddler uses a two-blade paddle for rowing. Built and designed to right itself when flipped (Eskimo roll) a kayak is best used for whitewater rough ride and racing.
Inflatable kayaks or canoes
Manufacturers call these inflatable boats “kayaks” but there are some kayaking and canoeing aficionados that refuse to consider inflatable kayaks as “kayaks”. The inflatable kayak is nowhere near the capabilities of its fiberglass shell cousin. If used in any whitewater ride, an inflatable kayak will not right itself as easily as its hard-shell counterpart. As some kayak aficionados say “you wear a kayak” and not just climb in and paddle.
However, kayaking in an inflatable is really quite safe as long as you stay away from class IV and V whitewater trips. Settle for calmer water as inflatable kayaks are easier to handle in placid bodies of water including a tranquil open sea.
An inflatable kayak (or canoe?) is definitely right for a person or two to experience a quiet nature trip down a river. This type of kayak is easier to paddle than a conventional soft tail or sport boat and is definitely more stable and rigid than a hard-shell canoe or its counterpart. If you intend to use an inflatable kayak for whitewater racing, think hard. You will definitely not win any race and you’d be lucky enough to finish the race.
Easy to inflate, deflate and store, an inflatable kayak is the best choice for backpacker and campers who want to enjoy a relaxing paddle or even a challenging low-grade whitewater ride. A nice choice is a Sevylor for a two-seater kayak that is compact enough to fit into a standard backpack with room to spare. The whole set, including the paddles and pumps weighs 35 pounds. These kayaks are cheap at 0 though there are heavier, more durable and larger models that are more expensive with some costing as much as 00.
